Patel gives statement on Ukranian refugees

Home secretary Priti Patel updated the House on what the government are doing for Ukrainians seeking refuge in the UK.

Patel told the House that she has “removed the usual language requirements and salary thresholds” for Ukrainians who want to come to live with their families following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. However, she still asked immigrants to go to application centres before coming to the UK.

Labour’s Yvette Cooper, the shadow home secretary, expressed her “relief” that the government had changed its position but was “concerned about the way the Home Office has handled this”.
