Nadine Dorries – The UK’s response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine

The secretary for digital, culture, media and sport Nadine Dorries gave an update on how the government is using sport to fight the “third front” against Putin through culture.

There was widespread support for the measures that were put in place and in response to the shadow minister Chris Elmore’s question on the further steps being taken, Dorries told the House that she was “holding a summit this afternoon with around 20 countries to take a joint position”.

Conservative MP Bob Blackman revealed the breaking news the Formula One had cancelled their contract with the Russian promotor for the Grand Prix, meaning that no further races would take place in the country. Dorries welcomed the news, which she said had taken a “huge effort when all the planning, organisation and money has gone into place”.

There was also a light-hearted moment in which the Conservative MP Mark Logan summed up the feeling of many better than Dorries admitted she could, with the statement: “Putin may be Russian today, but he will not be Ukraine tomorrow”. This follows Russia Today being taken off UK TV.
