Truss and Lammy clash on Russian sanctions legislation
During foreign affairs questions, the foreign secretary Liz Truss blamed the Labour party for “making it tougher to sanction oligarchs” when faced with calls from shadow foreign secretary David Lammy for an “urgent reform to leave Putin-linked crooks with nowhere to hide”.
Lammy raised concerns of the UK sanctioning “just eight of the Navalny 35 list” compared to 19 and 15 by the EU and US respectively. Truss responded by highlighting the amount of asset in terms of worth that had been targeted by the UK is more than that of the EU and US.
There was unity from both sides in the UK working with allies to put a case to the ICC to “tackle war crimes” committed by the Russian government.
