In reaction to the energy and cost of living crisis, Greenpeace UK’s policy director, Doug Parr, said:
“Is the UK government reacting to the energy and cost of living crisis with all the empathy and acumen of Marie Antoinette? With energy bills set to rise by up to £850 from last year, ‘let them have a £150 council tax rebate’ simply won’t do.
“Fossil fuel giants are unjustly reaping the benefits of inflated energy prices, having raked in multi-billion-pound profits this year, with their bosses having taken home multi-million-pound pay checks.
“By imposing a windfall tax on these profits the government could provide financial support to vulnerable households and fund a nationwide programme to green our homes so we can get off gas. That’s the only kind of response that will help tackle the cost of living crisis, the climate crisis, the Ukraine crisis, and prevent millions of families from falling into poverty.”
