Graham Stuart: School funding system needs to change
Education committee chair Graham Stuart comments on the Today programme on the IFS' report on education funding:
"The IFS report confirms the current system of allocation is deeply unfair and anomalous, and it underlines rather than undermines the need for change.
"We have similar schools with similar needs receiving very different levels of funding. if that's t he case what we have is a deeply unfair system that needs to change.
"The last government hid behind complex formulae while directing funding to predominantly urban areas. People in rural areas earn less on average than people in cities, pay higher council tax and yet receive substantially less grant per head. And it's not fair.
"The government needs to have the courage to stand up and make the case of the change – there will be losers as well as winners."
