Tories launch anti-debt campaign

The Conservatives have launched an anti-debt campaign in central London, while Gordon Brown chairs a meeting on unemployment.
Mr Cameron revealed a new Conservative advert which featured a picture of a child and read: “Dad’s nose, mum’s eyes, Gordon Brown’s debt.”
“We want to turn this picture of despair into one of hope,” the Tory leader said.
“We want to show there is a different way. We can have a government that lives within its means, rather than beyond its means. That’s why we’re doing this.”
The Tories are in the middle stages of setting out their stall for a future general election with a message based on economic prudence.
They plan to trim the growth of spending by reducing it from £30 million to £24 million. They would then use £4 million out of the remaining £5 million to abolish the basic rate of savings tax.
“This government has allowed national debt to mushroom,” said shadow chancellor George Osborne.
“We need to have a change of attitude in government which only a change of party will bring about.”
