First Welsh loss for Labour in Merthyr Tydfil
Labour has lost its one-seat majority in Merthyr Tydfil, losing nine of its 17 seats.
The Liberal Democrats were the main winners, having stormed from no representation to six seats, meaning the council moves to no overall control.
There was better news for Labour in Neath Port Talbot where the Residents Association lost out heavily.
Their six seats were shared out between the main parties and two independents. Labour increased their number of councilors to 37.
In Anglesey Labour re-established a presence on the council, having not had any of the council’s 23 seats in 2004. They now have five but Plaid Cymru also gained two to take their tally to eight.
The unitary authority remains without overall control as a result.
And in Blaenau Gwent, Labour lost control of the unitary council for the first time in 13 years as it passed into no overall control.
Meanwhile initial reports suggest Plaid Cymru are in for a bad night, seeing dwindling report in their heartlands.
