Kit Malthouse was first elected as the Conservative MP for North West Hampshire in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 26,308.
The constituency of North West Hampshire contains the towns of Andover, Tadley and Whitchurch. Containing quick transport links to the belt of technology companies around Reading, there is also a presence for the defence industry in this area of the country. This has long been one of the safest Conservative seats in the country with this area being represented by the party ever since the Second World War.
Malthouse has served as Minister of State for Crime and Policing since 2019, having been the Minister of State for Housing and Planning between 2018-19, and Minister of State for Family Support in 2018.
He was elected to the Westminster City Council between 1998 and 2006, and was formerly a Deputy Leader of the Council.
Malthouse was then elected to the London Assembly between 2008 and 2016. He served as the Deputy Mayor of London responsible for policing under Borris Johnson between 2008 and 2016.
After briefly considering his own challenge for party leader, Malthouse backed Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.
Malthouse voted Leave in the 2016 EU referendum, but later gave his name to the so called ‘Malthouse compromise’ which tried to work a way through the Brexit deadlock with a new idea around the Irish backstop. The proposal was ultimately voted down in Parliament.
Born in Liverpool in 1966, Kit studied Politics and Economics at Newcastle-upon-Tyne University. Malthouse is a qualified accountant who worked initially with Deloitte and Touche. He then became a successful entrepreneur setting up the County Finance Group, an equipment finance provider. in which he remains a major shareholder.
Malthouse is a strong supporter of proposals for assisted dying.
Malthouse is married and has three children. He cites his interests as reading, gardening and watching modern dance. At a student he was interested in theatre and appeared on stage at the Newcastle Playhouse.
