Gerald Jones was first elected as the Labour MP for Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 10,606.
Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney is a former industrial and former coal mining area in Glamorgan, South Wales. This seat includes the village of Aberfan, where 144 lost their lives in the 1966 disaster in which a colliery spoil tip collapsed. This area has long been a Labour stronghold, backing the Party continuously since 1922.
Gerald Jones serves as an Opposition Whip and as a Shadow Welsh Affairs spokesperson.
Born in 1970, Gerald Jones worked in community development for the Gwent Association of Voluntary Associations. He was elected as a Councillor in Caerphilly in 1995 and previously served as Deputy Leader of the Council.
According to the Register of Members Interests, Jones employs his partner, Tyrone, as a Senior Parliamentary Assistant.
He supported Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge to Jeremy Corbyn.
At Westminster he is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Park run, Gambling Harm, Online and Home Electrical Safety, and Wales in the World.
