Andy Slaughter was first elected to Parliament for Ealing Acton and Shepherds Bush in 2005, and has been the Labour MP for Hammersmith since 2010. He was reelected in 2019 with a majority of 17,847.
The Hammersmith constituency covers the western part of the Borough of Hammersmith. Rising northwards from the River Thames, it includes the centre of Hammersmith, Earls Court, Shepherd’s Bush, and White City. The seat blends high priced privately owned housing with a large proportion of social housing. Wormwood Scrubs prison and the BBC TV Centre are both located here. Since the constituency boundaries were redrawn in 2010, this has become a safe Labour seat.
Slaughter currently serves as the Shadow Solicitor General. He previously served as a Shadow Justice spokesman between 2010 and 2016, but resigned in 2016 in protest at Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership. He supported Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership election.
Born in Hammersmith in 1960, Andy Slaughter attended Exeter university. He then undertook a number of different jobs, working variously for the British Safety Council, for Hammersmith Council, as an advisor to the Labour MP, Michael Meacher, and as a researcher for the BBC. He later retrained as a barrister specialising in personal injury.
Slaughter was a councillor on Hammersmith and Fulham council between 1986 and 2005. He was leader of the Council between 1996 and 2005.
He has been a longstanding opponent of the expansion of Heathrow airport.
Andy Slaughter is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Wine and Spirits; Palestine; Poland; Citizens Rights; Human Rights in the Gulf; Events; Extraordinary Rendition; Fire Safety and Rescue; Gypsies, Travellers and Roma; Legal Aid; and Heathrow Expansion and Regional Connectivity.
