Saville Roberts, Liz

Liz Saville Roberts was first elected as the Plaid Cymru MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 4,741.

The constituency of Dwyfor Merionnydd is found in North Wales in the county of Gwynedd.  It covers a large part of Snowdonia and contains the coastal towns of Pwlleli and Porthmadog, the inland town of Dolgellau, as well as the former mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, also known for its steam railway.  The Italian village at Portmeirion is found within this seat.  A quarter of the population is said to be over retirement age.   This part of Wales is one of the longest standing strongholds for Plaid Cymru, which the party has retained with relative comfort for a number of decades.

Saville Roberts is currently the Leader of Plaid Cymru in the House of Commons, a position she has held since 2017.  She is the first female Plaid Cymru MP.

Born in 1965, she grew up in Eltham, London, and moved to Wales to study Languages at Aberystwyth. Prior to becoming an MP, she worked in further education, focussing on the development of ‘Welsh medium’ further education and staff training.

Liz Saville Roberts was elected to Morfa Nefyn and Edern on Gwynedd Council in 2004.

Saville Roberts has opposed military intervention in Syria, and was a vocal opponent of Brexit.  In 2017 she introduced a Private Members Bill designed to shield rape victims from having their previous sexual history cross examined in Court.
