Churchill, Jo

Jo Churchill was first elected as the Conservative MP for Bury St Edmunds in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 24,998.

The constituency of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk contains the town of the same name, alongside the smaller towns of Stowmarket, Needham Market, and Thurston, and an area of central Suffolk countryside.  This area has voted Conservative at every election since 1865, albeit Tony Blair’s ‘New Labour’ did come close her back in 1997.

Churchill was appointed Under Secretary of State at the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in September 2021.  She was formerly Under Secretary of State for Health between 2019 and 2021, and before that a government Whip.

Born in 1964, Churchill attended Nottingham University.   She worked in business, including in the building industry. She later ran her own contracting company. The Register of Members Interests list her as a shareholder in South Lincolnshire Scaffolding Ltd.

Churchill is married with four daughters.  She has previously recovered from both thyroid cancer and breast cancer, and credits this journey with fostering her interest in politics.  She served on Lincolnshire Council between 2013 and 2015.

She was opposed to Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum, and served as PPS to Jeremy Hunt in Parliament between 2017 and 2018.
