Peter Grady was first elected as the SNP MP for Glasgow North in 2015 being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 5,601.
The Glasgow North constituency contains the more working class areas of Maryhill, alongside some of Glasgow’s more middle class districts in Hillhead and Kelvindale. Glasgow University can be found within this seat. In the 2016 EU referendum, close to four fifths of voters chose to Remain in the European Union, the highest figure for any seat in Scotland and one of the highest in the UK. Previously held by Labour, the SNP gained this seat during their 2015 landslide. They have retained it, albeit with reduced majorities in 2017 and 2019.
Grady has served as the SNP Chief Whip at Westminster since 2017. He was formerly the party’s spokesman on International Development between 2015 and 2017.
He was the National Secretary of the SNP between 2012 and 2016.
Peter Grady joined the Scottish National Party in 1997, when he was only 17. In 2014 he headed the Yes campaign for the 2014 independence referendum in the Kelvin area of Glasgow.
Born in Edinburgh in 1980, Patrick Grady grew up in Inverness and studied at Inverness Royal Academy, before attending the University of Strathclyde.
Prior to his election to Parliament, he worked as an advocacy manager for the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund in Scotland, London and Malawi. Patrick Grady is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Malawi.
Grady is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on War Crimes; the British Indian Ocean Territory; Colombia, Eritrea; CAFOD; and the Holy See.
