Stuart McDonald was first elected as the SNP MP for Cumbernauld, Kilsyth & Kirkintilloch East in 2015 being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 12,976.
The constituency of Cumbernauld, Kilsyth, and Krikintilloch East is found in North Lanarkshire in central Scotland. This seat has the longest name of any Parliamentary seat, and contains the towns of Croy, Cumbernauld and Greenfaulds. Formerly a safe Labour seat, it was gained by the SNP in their landslide year of 2015 and has been held relatively comfortably by the party ever since.
Stuart McDonald has been the SNP spokesperson on Immigration, Asylum and Border Control since 2015.
Born in 1978, Stuart McDonald was educated at Edinburgh University. He is a solicitor who worked for the NHS, and then as an Immigration lawyer for the Immigration Advisory Service.
He also previously worked as a Parliamentary and Public Affairs Officer for the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights, a Glasgow-based charity.
He served as Head of Information at Yes Scotland during the 2014 Scottish independence referendum campaign.
McDonald is an openly gay MP. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Immigration Law and Policy; Citizens Rights; and Choice at the End of Life.
