Anne-Marie Trevelyan was elected as the Conservative MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed in 2015 gaining the seat from the Liberal Democrats for the first time in over forty years. She was reelected in 2019 with a majority of 14,835.
The constituency of Berwick upon Tweed is the most northerly seat in England. It is a large rural constituency that spreads over 1,000 square miles. It contains the northern half of the county of Northumberland, including the towns of Berwick upon Tweed itself, Alnwick and Amble. Containing Holy Island, this seat also possesses an extremely long coastline that stretches for some fifty miles.
This seat was once a Liberal stronghold being held by Alan Beith for the Liberal Party and then Liberal Democrats continuously between 1973 and 2015. This area is one of just a handful of areas in the north east of England never to have voted Labour. The Conservatives have increased their majority considerably here since gaining the seat in 2015.
Trevelyan was appointed to the Cabinet as the Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade in September 2021.
She was previously the Minister of State responsible for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, and also served briefly in the Cabinet in 2020 as the last Secretary of State for International Development before the Department was abolished. She also had a stint as Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and 2020.
Trevelyan was a strong supporter of Brexit, and was an active member of the European Research Group of Conservative MPs.
She backed Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.
Born in Morpeth, Northumberland, in 1969, Trevelyan studied maths at Oxford Polytechnic. She then trained as a chartered account and worked for PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
Trevelyan is divorced with two children.
