Morris, James

James Morris was first elected as the Conservative MP for Halesowen & Rowley Regis in 2010 being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 12,074.

The constituency of Halesowen and Rowley Regis covers the southern part of the Borough of Dudley and includes the communities of Blackheath, Cradley Heath, and Halesowen on the outskirts of Birmingham.  Although the Conservatives won this seat with three fifths of the vote in the 2019 General Election, this is a highly volatile electoral area, which was actually held by Labour between 1997 and 2010 with quite sizeable majorities. Two thirds of the population voted for Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.

Morris has served as a government whip since 2020.  He was an assistant whip between 2019 and 2020.  Within the whips office he is Vice Chamberlain of HM Household.

Born in 1967, James Morris was educated at the University of Birmingham where he obtained a degree in English Literature. He then undertook postgraduate research at Oxford University. He holds an MBA from Cranfield School of Management.

Before becoming a Member of Parliament, he had a career as a small businessman specialising in computer software.

In 2003 he founded Mind the Gap, an independent campaign to promote civic action and to encourage more grass roots involvement in politics. Prior to his election, James Morris was the Chief Executive of Localis, a local government and localist think tank. He is also a founding director of the London Policy Institute.

Morris was a vocal opponent of same sex marriage.

He supported Remain in the 2016 EU referendum, and backed Jeremy Hunt in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.
