Andrea Leadsom was elected as Conservative MP for South Northamptonshire in 2010, being reelected in 2019 with a massive majority of 27,761.
The constituency of Northamptonshire South is a rural seat that spreads out from the suburbs of Northampton and covers the bottom quarter of Northamptonshire. It includes the towns of Brackley and Towcester. This has traditionally been one of the safest Conservative seats in the country, and has been represented by the party ever since 1910.
The seat contains RAF Croughton which is currently used as a US Air Force communications station. It was here that a local teenager, Harry Dunn was killed in a collision with a vehicle driven on the wrong side of the road by the wife of a US government employee, Ann Sacoolas, who later fled the UK.
Leadsom previously served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy between 2019 and 2020. She also previously served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs between 2016 and 2017, and as Leader of the House of Commons between 2017 and 2019.
During the Cameron government Leadsom was Energy Minister between 2015 and 2016, ad Economic Secretary to the Treasury between 2014 and 2015.
In 2016 she was a surprise candidate for the Conservative Party leadership and polled well, coming second to Theresa May.
Leadsom is seen as being on the right of the Conservative Party and was a strong supporter of Brexit.
Leadson has previously described how she is a Christian and ‘proud of it’. She has previously been part of a Bible study group in Parliament.
Born in 1963, Leadsom grew up in Kent and attended Tonbridge Girls Grammar School. She then attended Warwick University before embarking on a career in the city. During a 25 years career in financial services she was Director at Barclays Bank, Managing Director of a London hedge fund and more recently, Head of Corporate Governance for Invesco Perpetual.
Andrea Leadsom lives in a village near Towcester. She is married and has three children.
