Esterson, Bill

Bill Esterson was elected as the Labour MP for Sefton Central in 2010, and was reelected with a majority of 15,122 in 2019.

The Sefton Central constituency is located in north of Merseyside between Liverpool and Southport.  It contains the towns of Crosby and Formby. In terms of employment levels and owner occupancy statistics this is a more affluent constituency than many in Merseyside, and the area of Crosby was held by the Conservatives prior to the 1997 General Election.  Nonetheless the boundaries of the newly created constituency of Sefton Central have contrived to make this a very safe seat for the Labour Party.  The Aintree racecourse, home of the grand national, is found here.

Bill Esterson is currently a Shadow Business Minister.

Esterson supported Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership contest.  He supported Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge to Jeremy Corbyn.

Esterson was born in 1966, and acquired a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy from Leeds University. He trained with a large accountancy firm and later became a Director of a training consultancy.

He previously served as a Labour Party Councillor on Medway Council in Kent between 1995 and 2010.

Bill Esterson Is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Customer Service; Fair Business Banking; Canada; Foster Care Growth; Inclusive Growth; Internet, Communications and Technology; and Waterways.

He is married with two children.  He was previously opposed to military intervention in Syria.
