Knight, Greg

Greg Knight was elected as the Conservative MP for East Yorkshire in 2001, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 22,787.  Prior to this he had served as the MP for Derby North between 1983 and 1997.

The constituency of East Yorkshire Is found to the north of Humberside running up to the border with Durham.  It is a largely rural constituency that spreads out from the edge of York, through the market towns of Market Weighton, Pocklington, Driffield, to the seaside town of Bridlington in the east. Bridlington is the largest lobster port in Europe with 300 tonnes of the lobsters said to be landed there each year.  This area has been represented by the Conservatives at Westminster ever since 1950.

Knight was a government whip between 2012 and 2013.  He was Deputy Government Chief Whip under John Major between 1993 and 1996.  He served briefly as Minister of State for Industry between 1996 and 1997.

Born in 1949, Greg is a qualified solicitor and for ten years he ran his own law practice.  In 2021, he was retained as an advisor to Cambridge and Counties Bank Ltd.

Knight supported Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.  He backed Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.

Sir Greg Knight is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Historic Vehicles, and enjoys driving classic cars. He is Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Jazz Appreciation, and Spain.

In 2004 he became a founder member of MP4 – the world’s first Parliamentary rock group. According to the Register of Members Interests, Knight is still a member of the band, even in his seventies.

Sir Greg has also written a number of books including Westminster Words, Honourable Insults, Parliamentary Sauce and Right Honourable Insults.

Knight is married, and employs his wife as a Parliamentary Assistant.
