Rosie Winterton was first elected as the Labour MP for Doncaster Central in 1997, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 2,278.
The constituency of Doncaster Central in South Yorkshire is centred almost entirely on the town of Doncaster. Once at the heart of the coal mining and railway industries, the economy in this area has been forced to diversify in recent decades. This seat has been held by the Labour Party continuously since 1964, albeit with the Brexit Party polling 16% of the vote here in 2019, the Labour majority over the Conservatives decreased significantly at the last election.
Winterton serves as Deputy Speaker of the Commons, a post she has held since 2017. She stood to replace John Bercow but came fifth in the contest.
Winterton previously served as the Opposition Chief Whip between 2010 and 2016. She was sacked by Jeremy Corbyn in 2016. She was made a Dame in 2016.
Rosie Winterton also served in the last Labour government for almost a decade. She was Minister of State at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (2009-10), Minster of State at Department of Work and Pensions (2008 – 2009; Minister of State at the Department of Transport (2007 – 2008); Minister of State at the Department of Health (2003 – 2007); and Parliamentary Secretary at the Lord Chancellor’s Department (2001 – 2003).
Born in 1958, Winterton was educated at Danum Grammar School for Girls, and then studied History at the University of Hull in 1979.
Winterton first worked as John Prescott’s Constituency Personal Assistant from 1980 until 1986. Winterton then worked as a Parliamentary Officer for the Royal College of Nursing, and of Southwark Council, before joining the public affairs consultancy, Connect.
She returned to work for John Prescott after he became Deputy Leader of the Labour Party in 1994.
Dame Rosie Winterton is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Alevis. Winterton is said to enjoy sailing.
