Steven Bonnar is the Scottish National Party MP for Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill having gained the seat from the Labour Party in 2019. He was elected with a majority of 5,624.
The Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill is an urban and former industrial seat in North Lanarkshire. It was one of six seats regained by Labour in 2017, after they first lost this former stronghold to the SNP in 2015. The SNP regained the seat back in 2019.
Steven Bonnar was educated at Cardinal Newman, High School, Bellshill. He worked as an internal auditor for John Lewis, and previously as a security guard for British Home Stores before being elected to Parliament.
Born in 1981, Bonnar previously served as a councillor on North Lanarkshire Council.
He was accused of crossing his fingers as he pledged his allegiance to the Queen, when first being sworn in as an MP in 2019.
A Celtic fan, Bonar had a high profile dispute with his neighbour during the 2020 Covid lockdown after he hung a Celtic flag from his house. Bonar and his neighbour were charged by the police in relation to the street disturbance, but were later cleared of all charges.
