Stephen Farry is the Alliance MP for North Down in Northern Ireland, having first been elected to Parliament in 2019 with a majority of 2,968 over the DUP.
The North Down constituency covers Bangor and Holywood on the outskirts of Belfast. A strongly Protestant area it was previously represented by Lady Sylvia Hermon at Westminster for almost twenty years. Lady Hermon first sat in the Commons for the UUP but was elected as an Independent in 2010 before retiring in 2019. Obtaining a massive 35% swing in 2019, the cross community Alliance Party clearly attracted many of Hermon’s old voters.
Stephen Farry is the Deputy Leader of the Alliance Party.
Born in 1971,Farry studied politics at Queen’s University Belfast, before obtaining a PhD in International Relations. He worked in Washington for a year.
Farry served as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly from 2007 until being elected to Westminster in 2019. He was Minister for Employment and Learning between 2011-2016 in the Northern Ireland Executive. At Westminster he is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Further Education and Life Long Learning.
He was appointed an International Peace Scholar by the US institute of Peace in 2005
