Mike Wood is the Conservative MP for Dudley South, having first been elected to Parliament in 2015. He was reelected in 2019 with a majority of 15,565.
The constituency of Dudley South covers the central part of the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley in the West Midlands. It covers the area to the south of the town centre, alongside a number of residential areas outside of the town itself. This is the marginally more affluent of the two Dudley seats.
Since it was first created under the current boundaries, Dudley South was regarded as a swing marginal seat. The electorate here backed Labour between 1997 and 2010, and the Conservatives since 2010. This is a strong Brexit supporting area, in which 70% of the electorate backed Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum. In 2019 the Conservatives won this formerly marginal seat with some 67.9% of the vote.
Born in 1976, Mike Wood studied Law and Economics at Aberystwyth University. After university he worked work for Alexander Macmillan, the then Conservative MEP for the South West of England.
Following this, he worked for four years as a Policy Advisor in the European Parliament, before returning to the UK to work for the Conservative MPs Andrew Griffiths and James Morris, prior to being elected parliament himself.
Wood was elected to Dudley Council between 2014 and 2016.
Wood supported Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum. He supported Sajid Javid in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.
In 2015 he successfully introduced a Private Members Bill seeking to change the compensation system for those whose properties are damaged in riots. His Riot Compensation Bill became law in 2016.
Mike Wood is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Beer; the Black Country; the Commonwealth Games; the Furniture Industry; and Road Passenger Transport – Recovery and Renewal. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on City Regions Transport; Football; Global Education; Homelessness; and the West Midlands.
Wood was very ill with sepsis back in 2017 and has since campaigned around the need for better treatment for the condition. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Sepsis.
