Boris Johnson to meet Tory mayoral hopeful Sol Campbell
Boris Johnson is to meet for talks with former England footballer Sol Campbell, as senior Tories line him up to be the London mayor's successor.
City Hall sources confirmed to Politics.co.uk that the pair would meet "in the next few weeks."
Campbell recently told the Sun that he was "definitely interested" in standing for mayor but added that: "we’ll see what happens. A few more conversations need to take place."
He also recently declined the opportunity to stand to be the next Kensington MP saying that "my ambitions lie elsewhere in the political arena."
In recent months he has spoken out against Labour's plans for a mansion tax, which would overwhelmingly hit London properties.
The possibility of Campbell entering the Tory mayoral race has already been welcomed by some senior Tories.
However other figures in the party have privately questioned whether he is capable of doing the job.
"Sol has been a fantastic leader on and off the pitch," Possible Tory contender Michael Liebreich told Politics.co.uk.
"I will be listening carefully to see if he has a credible vision for London."
There are currently three confirmed candidates for the Conservative ticket. Current Deputy mayor for policing Stephen Greenhalgh has announced his intention of running, as has millionnaire businessman Ivan Massow and London Assembly member Andrew Boff. The selection process will begin after the general election.
