Grieve: Court’s decision on Qatada decision was unsurprising

Attorney-general Dominic Grieve argues on the Today programme that no English law allows for indefinite trial, but stressed that deportation is still the priority, after a judge awards radical cleric Abu Qatada bail:

"The court has indicated, not surprisingly, that it isn't possible in the UK to keep people detained without trial forever. The government is bound by the rule of law as much as anybody else."

The government is obviously very concerned about this case, very much wishes to see Abu Qatada deported to Jordan and, when he's in Jordan, tried fairly if the Jordanian authorities wish to put him on trial."

"He cannot be deported unless the assurances which are required following the judgment in the European Court of Human Rights can be secured."
