Pick of the week: No-platforming, prisons and porn
Our five most-read items this week.
Five: Interview: Ruth Davidson
With polls suggesting the Tories could challenge Labour as the main opposition party in Scotland, our fifth most-read item this week was an interview with the Scottish Conservative Leader, Ruth Davidson. She discussed Margaret Thatcher, SNP tricks, and the Scottish working class.
Four: The smoking ban could spark a long, hot summer in English prisons
Next we have a piece which looked at how a prison smoking ban would impact prisoners. It suggested that with tobacco being a currency for those behind bars, an outright ban could spark trouble in English prisons.
Three: Body found at immigration detention centre
In third place is a disturbing report of a death at the Colnebrook immigration detention centre. The detainee who was said to have been on "constant suicide watch" was found "unresponsive in his room" this week. The tragic death is likely to intensify calls for detention numbers to be reduced.
Two: Is this the most inane government consultation of all time?
Next is a piece which suggested that our embarrassment over pornography has led to politicians being able to churn out ignorant regulation which almost impossible to enforce.
One: Ignore the excuses – Peter Tatchell has been no-platformed
In the top spot this week we have an article which looked at the latest free speech and no-platforming row. The latest furore was over the National Union of Students LGBT representative refusing to share a stage with Peter Tatchell. This piece argued that despite claims that this doesn't count as no-platforming, that is exactly what it is.
