State-of-play: UK housing stock by local authority and sector

It is widely acknowledged that hundreds of thousands of new homes need to be built each year to provide for the UK’s growing population.

In their 2019 election manifesto, the Conservatives pledged to build 300,000 new homes per year by the mid-2020s.

Planning reform is high on the agenda, with the publication of a new planning white paper in June 2020, and building and construction featuring prominently in the government’s strategy to revive the economy once the Covid-19 pandemic is behind us.

But there are questions as to whether it will be enough, with housing charity Shelter calling for three million new social homes alone to be built over 20 years to solve the housing crisis.

Politics.co.uk has used data from the UK Parliament to visualise the current state of play of housing in England, broken down by sector – private, local authority and housing association – and by local authority.
