Blair ‘excited’ by bank role

Tony Blair says he is excited by his new role as a senior adviser to a major US bank.

It was revealed today that the former prime minister is joining JPMorgan Chase; he will be acting in an advisory capacity to chief executive Jamie Dimon.

He will combine the job, which will also see him attend conferences and briefings, with his role as Middle East envoy and could earn as much as £500,000 a year for his work with the Wall Street giant.

Mr Blair says his new position offers up a “great opportunity” to contribute to the bank’s work internationally.

“They are a leading company at the cutting edge of the global economy, with a footprint in virtually every part of the world,” the 54-year-old said.

“I look forward to advising them on how they approach the huge political and economic changes that globalisation brings. I am excited at the prospect of joining Jamie Dimon, for whom I have a lot of respect, and the whole team, adding my own experience to their work and helping them to grow.”

This is Mr Blair’s first job in the private sector since leaving politics, where it has long been noted his contacts book could provide a valuable asset.
