Jack Straw set for hostile prison reception
Jack Straw is bracing himself for a hostile reception as he addresses prison officers later today.
Mr Straw will deliver a speech at the annual conference of the Prison Officers’ Association (POA) which has repeatedly called for industrial action over the pay dispute.
Delegates voted earlier this week for an immediate work-to-rule, including turning up for work at the exact starting time.
Unions have also warned the industrial action will start to affect prisons in England and Wales by the end of this week, the Press Association reports.
The POA has expressed its anger at a 2.2 per cent pay deal earlier this year following the government’s controversial decision to stage a 2.5 per cent wage award, reducing the value of the pay increase.
“It is clear they believe that New Labour has broken promises made to the POA and has reintroduced anti-trade union, Tory legislation, which is abhorrent,” a POA spokesman said.
Legislation is set to be introduced shortly banning prison officers from striking.
