Tony Blair ‘advising’ Gordon Brown on election win
Tony Blair has been advising Gordon Brown on how to win the next general election, according to the former prime minister’s wife Cherie.
Mrs Blair said her husband is confident that Mr Brown can beat David Cameron.
In an interview with the Times, the barrister denied recent comments by Lord Levy suggesting that the former prime minister has a lack of faith in Mr Brown.
She told the paper: “I know that Tony thinks Gordon could win the election and I know that he has spoken to Gordon about how he could do that,” adding that the former colleagues still speak.
In a revealing interview as part of the launch of her autobiography, Mrs Blair also praised Sarah Brown’s ability to avoid “the spotlight”, noting that she believes the prime minister’s wife is doing “a fantastic job”, although acknowledging that she and Mrs Brown have never been close.
And Mrs Blair argued that any issues between her and the present prime minister are “nothing personal”, maintaining that these occurred “because I thought my husband was the best person for the job”.
Referring to Mr Brown’s currently deteriorating popularity, she spoke of the importance of the support of his family, asserting that “even in these darkest moments he knows there is something important outside politics for him”.
Prime Minister Brown suffered some crushing defeats at the local election polls last week, while Boris Johnson’s victory over Labour’s Ken Livingston as London mayor added to his political woes.
