Adonis eyed as future Tory minister
Lord Adonis could remain in government even if Labour loses the next general election, the Conservatives have suggested.
Shadow schools secretary Michael Gove said yesterday Lord Adonis, currently the parliamentary under secretary of state for schools and learners, is talented enough to remain in office.
“I think Andrew Adonis has contributed hugely to the education debate in this country. The ideas that he and Tony Blair wanted to implement in education were the right ideas for the country,” the Times quoted Mr Gove as saying.
He said David Cameron would be prepared to consider Lord Adonis staying on in government as long as he left the Labour party.
“It’s a pity that Labour party politics meant the he has never been able to implement his full vision of reform,” Mr Gove added.
Lord Adonis has been charged with overseeing the expansion of the government’s flagship academies programme, which is expected to be championed again by Gordon Brown in next year’s education bill.
