Brown ‘prepares to reshuffle pack’
Prime minister Gordon Brown is reportedly looking to reshuffle his Cabinet ministers.
The Independent reports that the prime minister has urged all cabinet ministers to cut short their holiday so as to organise a grand meeting at the prime minister’s retreat, Chequers, early in September.
It adds that foreign secretary David Miliband, who faced a backlash over a newspaper article last week in which appeared to criticise the party’s leadership but failed to mention Mr Brown, has already cancelled a visit in order to attend the meeting.
According to the Independent, health secretary Alan Johnson is likely to be made deputy prime minister under the new set-up with promotions possible for immigration minister Liam Byrne, housing minister Caroline Flint and employment relations minister Pat McFadden.
Downing Street has refused to comment on reports of a cabinet reshuffle.
Mr Brown’s leadership of Labour has come under question after last month’s loss of a by-election in Scotland’s Glasgow East constituency.
