politics.co.uk poll shows strong support for Boris
Boris Johnson is enjoying a high degree of public support, a politics.co.uk poll suggests on the 100th day the mayor has been in power.
Asked whether Mr Johnson was a better mayor than Ken Livingstone, his Labour predecessor, 76 per cent of respondents said yes, while only 20 per cent said Mr Livingstone was better.
Mr Johnson also appears to have survived the controversy over his deputy Ray Lewis, with 64 per cent of respondents saying he handled the situation well.
The news will make good reading for Mr Johnson since many commentators used the affair to highlight questions about the mayor’s judgment.
But asked how optimistic they were about Mr Johnson’s chances of improving some of the capital’s most pressing problems, respondents were less unanimous.
Only 40 per cent of politics.co.uk users thought Mr Johnson would be successful in reducing knife crime in London.
That figure dropped significantly when asked if Mr Johnson would be able to improve congestion, with only 28 per cent of respondents thinking he could do it. Forty per cent of users believed he would fail to ease congestion.
Mr Johnson provoked consternation from environmentalists and Labour assembly members when he scrapped Mr Livingstone’s plans to impose a £25 congestion charge on higher polluting vehicles.
Today is Mr Johnson’s 100th day in power. He adopted the role three days after being announced as the new mayor of London. You can read politics.co.uk’s feature about Mr Johnson record in office here.
