Tory MEP expelled over expenses
North-west Conservative MEP Den Dover has been expelled from the Tory party and looks set to face a criminal investigation after an inquiry found him guilty of expense abuses.
Mr Dover, who was previously MP for Chorley, was ordered to repay £500,000.
The expulsion comes a day after David Cameron withdrew the whip from Mr Dover, after he heard the results of the European parliament inquiry.
Harald Romer, the European parliament’s secretary-general, said the probe found ‘unaccountable expenditure’ of more than £500,000.
A total of £758,146 over seven years had been paid into a company run by his wife and daughter, even though Mr Dover said he had no financial interest in it.
The company made a £1,200 donation to the Conservative party last year.
