Labour bucks trend to take by-election

Labour has won its first by-election seat of 2009, bucking a strong national drift towards the Conservatives.
Rohini Simbodyal took a Tory seat at Jubilee ward in Enfield Borough in north London.
The Tory majority at the authority has now dwindled to three.
Cannock West in Staffordshire’s Cannock Chase District saw a big shift towards Labour, with the Tory majority being severely cut down.
But the Conservatives managed to defend a marginal London seat when they won at Waddon in Croydon.
The results run against recent opinion polls, which show David Cameron’s Conservatives pulling safely ahead of Labour even on economic issues.
