Brown calls extra Cabinet meeting

Gordon Brown is spending the entire morning with his new Cabinet this morning as they plan the Labour government’s response to last week’s disastrous European elections.
Downing Street has characterised the three-hour meeting as an “away-day” which is neither away nor a day.
The Cabinet will “discuss the government’s future plans for building a better Britain”, the prime minister’s spokesman said.
After their official meeting the Cabinet will discuss political issues – namely, how Britain’s governing party can recover from its disastrous showing in last week’s local and European elections.
Earlier this week No 10 outlined the government’s three priorities at present: democratic renewal, the economy and reforming public services.
After the prime minister addressed the first with his statement to the Commons on Wednesday, he will be hoping to make progress on the other two with his Cabinet supporters tomorrow.
