Martin Salter said he had been texting on his mobile phone to justify how he was seen dozing off in the House of Commons yesterday.

Speaking to Andrew Peach on the BBC this morning, he said he was in fact reading a message he received from Mr Peach’s co host Henry Kelly.

The Labour MP for Reading West was shown sinking in his seat on live TV while attending the debate about the new speaker of the House.

The 55 year old was campaign manager for Tory John Bercow, who became the new speaker yesterday in the first secret ballot in parliament’s history.

“John’s got to build bridges with all the political parties but never forget that his nomination attracted the support of six political parties in the House. No other candidate for speaker has ever achieved that,” Mr Salter said.
