Tories offer Totnes ‘primary’

Voters in Totnes will have the chance to decide which Conservative candidate will fight the next election in a US-style primary.

After incumbent Tory Anthony Steen announced he would step down in the wake of the expenses scandal three candidates will campaign across the constituency for the chance to be the Tory candidate.

They are Torbay mayor Nick Bye, Sara Randall Johnson and Sarah Wollaston.

Conservative party leader David Cameron said the move by Totnes Conservative Association gave the constituency’s electorate a “unique chance” to choose who the candidate would be.

“It is an exciting opportunity to re-engage with the voters in Totnes and give them a real say in who will be the Conservative candidate at the next election,” he said.

Ballot papers are being distributed to each eligible voter before the primary takes place in two weeks’ time.
