Expenses boss gets a pay rise

The man in charge of the expenses system received an eight per cent pay rise last year, according to newly released Commons accounts.

Andrew Walker, director of resources, moved up an income bracket, earning between £125,000 and £130,000.

Mr Walker was criticised after playing an active part in trying to prevent the publication of MPs’ expenses.

He attended an information tribunal last year in which he argued the Common’s position.

His position was further undermined when many MPs relied on the fact that the Commons fees office had agreed their expenses.

The most senior Commons official, Malcolm Jack, now appears to earn more than the prime minister, with his pay rising into the £190,000 – £195,000 bracket. He receives additional benefits in kind of £20,000 – £25,000.

Any salary increases have to be approved by a senior pay panel.
