Police investigate MI6 officer torture claims

Scotland Yard have confirmed they are investigating an MI6 officer for possible complicity in torture.
The officer was allegedly reported to attorney general Baroness Scotland by MI6 on its own initiative and the Metropolitan police were subsequently asked to investigate.
Scotland Yard said the allegations relate to an incident involving “the conditions under which a non-Briton was held” and “potential involvement of British personnel”.
The investigation came to light in a letter from foreign secretary David Miliband to shadow foreign secretary William Hague.
Mr Hague had written to Mr Miliband regarding allegations of complicity in torture by officers of the Security Service MI5.
In his response Mr Miliband said: “The government cannot comment further both to avoid prejudice and to protect the individuals involved. The scope and handling of any police investigation is a matter for the police themselves.”
Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman, Edward Davey said: “Given the gravity and number of allegations of UK complicity in torture, separate limited police investigations alone are inadequate.
“The case for a full judicial inquiry has become even stronger.
“The lack of information available on this case is unacceptable.”
Scotland Yard is already probing claims MI5 was complicit in the interrogation and ill-treatment of Binyam Mohamed.
