Telegraph reveals expenses mole
By politics.co.uk staff
The individual who sold details of MPs’ expenses to the Telegraph was motivated by anger at troops’ inadequate equipment, the paper has claimed.
According to the newspaper, staff used to work on MPs’ receipts in secrecy while under guard by servicemen trying to earn extra money between tours. This finally convinced one of the the staff to make the details public.
The newspaper confirmed it had paid £110,000 for the information, slightly above what was estimated.
The leak of MPs’ expenses changed the system at Westminster, probably forever, by triggering waves of public disgust and prompting rapid reform in the Commons.
The revelations were made in a book published today by the Daily Telegraph on the expenses scandal.
