European MEPs will be denied access to parliament following a vote in the Commons.

MEP had previously enjoyed parliamentary passes as a by-product of their election, but they will now have to queue and be security screened along with members of the public before entering the parliamentary estate.

The vote was on an early day motion by Labour backbencher John Mann, who only partly concealed its aim of ensuring the BNP cannot come to parliament.

The last European elections saw two BNP MEPs elected, including party leader Nick Griffin.

“This stops the BNP parading round here as if they’re legitimate politicians,” Mr Mann said last night.
