Conservative candidates will be pounding the tarmac, campaigning on the subject of Heathrow airport in south west London today.

Ironically, the party’s ‘day of action’ comes when one of the busiest patches of sky in the world is empty of aircraft, and the airport a hive of inactivity.

The Tories’ Heathrow action day is intended to highlight the party’s objections to a third runway at Heathrow to voters living under the approach and take-off zones.

Shadow ministers for transport and London, Theresa Villiers and Justine Greening respectively, will be visiting street stalls throughout the area and canvassing shoppers.

Candidates for Richmond Park, Zac Goldsmith, and for Hammersmith and Shepherds’ Bush, Shaun Bailey will also be manning stalls in their constituencies.

Mr Goldsmith, who ran the ecologist magazine, has threatened to quit as an MP, if elected, if the Conservatives change their policy of opposition to the runway, to allow voters to “penalise [his] party.”

Restrictions on flights into and out of Britain remain until tomorrow, caused by the cloud of ash created by a volcanic explosion in Iceland.
