Liam Fox’s flat burgled, car stolen
Shadow defence secretary Liam Fox’s car has been stolen and his flat broken into, the Conservatives have confirmed.
The senior Conservative frontbencher had been due to launch his party’s armed forces manifesto in a press conference in London this morning.
Police were called to Dr Fox’s flat in south-east London at around 07:20 this morning – 80 minutes before Dr Fox’s press conference was due to begin.
A Conservative party source told politics.co.uk Dr Fox’s laptop was missing, but added that the reported theft of briefing papers for the leaders’ debates was “speculation”.
A Metropolitan police spokesman said officers from the Met’s burglary squad based in Southwark were in attendance at the scene following “reports of a burglary”. Efforts are ongoing to establish what has been taken.
It has also been reported that Dr Fox’s mobile phone was among the items missing, but the Met were unable to give details at this stage.
The theft is extremely bad timing for Dr Fox, who had been due to drive to Bristol for the leaders’ debate this evening.
It came as politics.co.uk reported that one of his shadow ministerial team, Julian Lewis, had compared the dangers of gay sex with the dangers of serving on the frontline in places like Afghanistan.
