Labour marginal candidate arrested
By Sasjkia Otto
The Labour parliamentary candidate for a key marginal seat was arrested after crashing into a roundabout on Monday.
Kathryn Smith, standing in Gravesham in Kent, is understood to have been breathalysed at the scene. Ray Parker, her agent, told the BBC she had asked to provide a blood sample.
Kent Police said she was arrested and bailed until July 10, pending further investigations.
She is believed to have been cut from the car by firefighters in University Way, Dartmouth, at about 10pm on Monday before being taken to hospital. She was not seriously hurt.
Mr Parker said she had discharged herself from hospital early Monday morning. He said her cuts and bruises were not expected to affect the campaign and she was out meeting people in the town centre yesterday.
The Gravesham seat is a key marginal which Tory candidate Adam Holloway took from Labour in 2005 with 654 votes.
Ms Smith was unavailable for comment.
