Users of the website Mumsnet, which has taken on a surprisingly important role in British political fortunes, have given Nick Clegg a clear and decisive lead over his rivals.

The Lib Dem leader was supported by 43% of the site’s users, with Gordon Brown on 26% and David Cameron on just 22%.

The site’s users have been the subject of a concerted wooing campaign throughout the election campaign, with all three leaders taking time out of their schedule to do Q&A sessions on the website.

Asked about the final leaders’ debate, 40% thought Mr Clegg had won, 31% thought Mr Brown had won and 29% thought Mr Cameron had won.
