The former mayor of London officially launched his campaign to become Labour candidate in the race for City Hall today.

Ken Livingstone, who was the capital’s first elected mayor between 2000 and 2008, is running against former Bethnal Green and Bow MP Oona King.

Further candidates have until June 18th to launch their bid. A shortlist of candidates will be created on June 24th, before hustings begin. The final candidate is selected by London party members and affiliate organisations and announced a day before the Labour leader is selected.

Mr Livingstone enjoyed a popular stint as London mayor in his eight-year tenure, presiding over the London Olympics bid and the 7/7 bombings.

Many residents credit him with creating an effective night bus system and the introduction of the widely used Oyster card, as well as the controversial congestion charge.

He was defeated by Boris Johnson following a tough campaign which saw Mr Livingstone come under pressure for the behaviour of some of his senior staff.
