Thousands stopped and searched illegally

Thousands of people in Britain have been illegally stopped and searched, according to figures released by the Home Office.
Section 44 of the Terrorism Act has had its powers misused by police, with actions taking place without the required authorisations.
Police minister Nick Herbert blamed administrative errors and ordered an internal review.
The powers under the Terrorism Act allow for stop and search even where there is no suspicion an offence has been committed but they require the approval of a police chief and can only be used in specific areas. The home secretary must later approve the decision.
The Metropolitan police are considering how to contact the individuals concerned.
