Gordon Brown’s wife Sarah is to write an account of her time inside Downing Street, she has announced.

Mrs Brown spent the last decade living in No 10 alongside her husband, first as chancellor and then as prime minister.

She gave up her work as a public relations executive to concentrate on charitable efforts while raising the Browns’ two children, John and Fraser.

“Just agreed with my publisher Ebury to write a book – working title ‘Behind the Black Door’, she informed her tens of thousands of Twitter followers.

Mrs Brown added she expected to be “chained to laptop from Monday morning” but was told by Twitter followers her working title was the same as that of a 1980s pornographic film.

Her memoirs follow those of Cherie Blair, Tony Blair’s wife, and will come in the wake of Mr Blair’s own memoirs due this autumn.

Peter Mandelson, who until last month served as the business secretary, is also publishing a book later this summer.
