David Cameron takes his Cabinet to Yorkshire today, in a continuation of Gordon Brown’s attempts to break the London-centric nature of British politics.

He is expected to use the event to unveil a £1bn Regional Growth Fund to contribute to regional economies.

Labour was criticised for turning the Cabinet into a photo-op when it pursued the strategy, and there was anger at the reported cost of the venture – coming in at £100,000 a time.

Mr Brown revived the practise for the first time since 1920 when he became prime minister, and Mr Cameron appears equally smitten.

Ministers usually arrange events around the local area during the trips.
